Natalya Florensky is a matriarch of a whole clan of artists. Not only her late husband, her son and her daughter, but also her son and daughter in law as well as grandchildren are all well-established artists working across a whole spectrum of styles and technics. Since graduating from the prestigious Saint Petersburg Shtieglitz State Academy of Art and Design in the 60th Florensky has been enjoying a prominent artistic career exploring a diversity of genres and media but mostly concentrated her efforts on working in the field of academic scientific illustration. It might seem surprising to an uninitiated, but even today, in the oh-so-precise digital age, the world of academia, as far as Natural History is concerned, does not rely on photography and, following the centuries-old tradition, dedicated scholars always prefer to commission hand drawn illustrations for their treatises. Collaborating with acclaimed biologists on creating tome upon tome of Natural History Florensky amassed a stupendous body of work over the years. What we offer here is the precious original artwork from her collection executed in ink and watercolors.
